2008 Issue Briefing: Taxes and the Economy

Posted on Sun, 09/28/2008 - 10:55pm by Eva Lam

Did you know that...

  • Barack Obama's tax plan will cut taxes by at least $1,000 for the average middle-class family?
  • John McCain's tax plan offers a $270,000 tax cut to the richest 0.1% of American households?
  • Barack Obama is a strong supporter of the Employee Free Choice Act, which makes it easier for workers to form unions free of employer intimidation?
  • John McCain tried to cancel last Friday's presidential debate in order to attend a meeting in Washington about solutions to the financial crisis - then said nothing for the first 40 minutes of the meeting?

All this and more in LegCom's first 2008 Issue Briefing on Barack Obama and John McCain's positions on taxes and the economy. Download it here.

Democrats Prepare for Election

Posted on Sun, 09/21/2008 - 11:30pm by Sam Novey

After receiving a record 600 sign-ups already this year, the Harvard College Democrats are revving up for an active election season, which kicked off last night with an appearance by former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack at the club’s introductory meeting. Yesterday evening, a crowd of about 250 students, mostly freshman, packed into the Tsai Auditorium in CGIS to learn more about the Dems and to hear Vilsack, a fall 2008 Institute of Politics Fellow, articulate the problems America faces and how college students can make a difference.

Harvard Right to Serve

Posted on Mon, 04/21/2008 - 3:12pm by Christian Garland
When: Sat, May 24 at 5:00 pm to Sat, May 31 at 5:00 pm

A groundbreaking bus tour protesting Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, “Right to Serve” is an LGBT event in which everyone devoted to true equality—gay or straight, open or closeted, liberal or conservative—can participate. The day after finals end, students from Harvard College and the various graduate schools will embark on a weeklong journey that will highlight the injustice of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. The bus tour will make four stops across the country; and at each stop, one openly gay Harvard student will attempt to enlist for military service. When their desire to serve is rejected, participants on the tour will sit-in at the recruitment station to highlight the injustice of denying a citizen the right to serve based solely on their sexual orientation.
