One of the most important senate races this year is taking place right in our backyard (well....neighbor's backyard) and features someone near and dear to our Harvard hearts, former IOP Director Jeanne Shaheen. Governor Shaheen is a great person, a fantastic governor, and one of the greatest hopes for a Democratic pickup in 2008. Her opponent, John Sununu, is none of those things. So join us next Wednesday at 4PM at SocialSphere Strategies (College House, 1430 Massachusetts Ave) as we welcome Gov. Shaheen and discuss her upcoming race. For more info, please contact Jarret at president@harvarddems.com
Hey Everybody -
The next few weeks are going to be decisive for the Democratic primary - so take a moment this weekend and be a part of it! Both Students for Hillary and Students for Obama have organized ways to get involved:
If You Support Hillary:
There will be phonebanks this weekend and on Tuesday. If you're interested please contact campaigns@harvarddems.com
If You Support Obama:
The Obama campaign is sending a bus down to Rhode Island on Saturday morning. They'll be leaving directly from at 9am and coming back by 6pm. They'll also have phonebanking opportunities. If you're interested please contact campaigns@harvarddems.com
No matter what, it should be a great time volunteering for your candidate.
Get excited!
The New Hampshire primary is days away and the Harvard College Democrats will be running a bus up to New Hampshire for a two day stay in the Granite State. We’ll be going up on the morning of January 7th, spending the night in New Hampshire, and then campaigning all day on January 8th, Primary Day! Transportation and housing will be provided.
We’ll have teams going to volunteer with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards. If you’re unable to come for both days, shoot us an email at campaigns@harvarddems.com, and we’ll see if we can arrange something.
There are few things like Primary Day in New Hampshire – so try to put down the books for day or so and join us for a great experience. Just RSVP below (once you click on the subject line) -please put the candidate in parentheses after your name!
Update: We'll also be heading to the Jeanne Shaheen for Senate campaign, as part of the effort to replace Senator John Sununu with our former IOP Director! If you don't have a Presidential candidate, but want to give back to democratic party, this is a great opportunity to get involved!
Come join the Dems this Saturday as we head to New Hampshire for the last campaign trip of 2007! We'll be heading up to the lovely Manchester, NH to volunteer for a variety of Democratic presidential and senatorial candidates.
We'll be leaving from Johnston Gate at 10am this Saturday morning aboard a comfortable school bus. From there, we'll head to the New Hampshire headquarters for the Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards Presidential Campaigns as well as the Shaheen for Senate campaign office if you're undecided. This is the last trip in 2007 to make a difference for your candidate and for democrats - and it should be a great time.
Please just sign up by clicking on the event and we look forward to seeing you Saturday! After you have typed in your name, please also indicate which campaign you would like to work for. Remember, you don't have to support someone to come along!
If you have any questions please contact Audrey White at campaigns@harvarddems.com
UPDATE: Due to predicted hurricane-force rains tomorrow, the campaigns have cancelled their outdoor canvassing activities and don't have enough indoor work for us to do. So, unfortunately, we'll be having to cancel the trip. Check back for more information about future trips!
Join the Dems this Saturday morning as we go to Manchester, New Hampshire to canvass for a range of Democratic candidates.
We'll all be leaving from Johnston Gate on the same big yellow school bus at 10am, but you can sign up to spend the day volunteering for: Jeanne Shaheen for NH Senate; Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John Edwards for President.
If you're interested, we'll also be meeting in Annenberg around 9:30 to fuel up right for an intense day of campaigning! (We'll have hot chocolate on the bus as well!)
Click here to sign up! When you sign up, please indicate which candidate you will be campaigning for in parentheses after your name. [Example: "Mel McGowan (Shaheen)".] It is also very important that you list your cell phone number.
Where: Quincy SCR
Students for Obama will have a group discussion on political messaging with Tim McCarthy, Lecturer on History and Literature and KSG Adjunct Lecturer on Public Policy, this Thursday. All are welcome.
For more info, or to learn about Students for Obama, contact Nate at nlubin@fas.
Where: Mather Small Dining Room (come to the Mather dining hall, then it's your first left into the door by the drink machines -- or just call me if you get lost, 617-233-1341).
Are you looking for a no-BS progressive candidate for President? One with a real plan for universal health care, an end to poverty, college for everyone (not just the well-off), and a return to people-power in Washington? Or are you already familiar with JOHN EDWARDS?
Either way, come to the year's first meeting of Students for Edwards. We're getting off to a late start, but it's not going to stop us from barnstorming New Hampshire this Saturday, as well as working to educate Harvard's campus about the real issues in this race -- since, of course, John Edwards has clearly been the policy leader in the Democratic field. Plus, we can do anything else you want; we're open-ended.
We'll meet this Tuesday at 8 PM in the Mather Small Dining Room. If you can't make that but you want to learn more, shoot me an email (mkolic@fas) or come find me at the Dems meeting tomorrow night. (I'm the guy with the big Edwards sticker on my computer.)

THIS WEEKEND -- the first of our many trips into the Northern Hinterlands on behalf of the various 2008 candidates. This week, Students for Hillary and Students for Obama will be heading up to Manchester for a day of canvassing and carmaraderie; in future look out for, among others, Students for Edwards, and the Stop Sununu campaign.
For more info or to RSVP, contact Campaigns Director Mel McGowan.
Want to hang out with Bill Clinton this weekend?
Me too. Good thing he's coming to LOWELL, MA to stump for Democratic Candidate for Congress NIKI TSONGAS this SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH!
The Tsongas campaign has invited the Dems to participate in a college canvass in Lowell, starting at noon. We'll leave from the Harvard Square T-Stop around 11 on Sunday morning and then connect to take the Commuter Rail to Lowell. Once we get there, the campaign will pick us up and bring us to their headquarters where lunch will be provided for us. We'll spend four hours or so door-knocking for Tsongas, then the campaign will bring us to the Clinton Rally where, apparently, we will have great seats to hear Bill's speech!
The only money involved will be for your transportation on the T (about $14). Dues-paid members will only have to pay their fare one way, the Dems will subsidize the other half of travel costs.
Location: Dunster JCR
A conversation and organizing meeting with: Laura Pena
Deputy Director of Women's Outreach, Hillary Clinton for President
Join Laura and Harvard Students for Hillary, as we discuss how the campaign is organizing women around the nation, and how we can organize women on our campus to make Hillary "Madam President."
Please RSVP here if you plan to attend.
Location: Sever 203

"Students for" representatives go head to head in a rhetorical grudge-match to rival the insanity of the actual televised debate. (Students for Gravel will be represented. Nuff said.)
Location: Thayer Basement
Students for Obama and Students for Hillary will be meeting briefly (at 6:40 and 6:45 respectively) in Thayer basement before all the "Students for" groups come together to watch the first Democratic Presidential Primary Debate!

You can order the Students for Hillary T-Shirts on the web.
Price is $10 + S&H
Do you support a candidate? Do you now? Do you support that candidate enough to get on your hands and knees to CLEAN TOILETS??!? Because that's what we're asking you to do.
The Dems CLEANING UP POLITICS DAY will entail working as many or few hours as you choose, for Dorm Crew -- proceeds going to support the Dems' campaign effort for the candidate of your choice. It's more fun than you'd think; ask Garrett!
You do need to sign up. Bear in mind that serious bonding and fabulous prizes will be involved...
